Detailed Itinerary
DAY 1 – Arrival and Orientation
Fly or drive from Nairobi to Samburu. As you descend the highlands, the air warms and the landscape turns to red earth and scrub. Arrive at your lodge on
the riverbank. Watch crocodiles sunning themselves and elephants digging for water in the dry riverbed during your welcome drink. Afternoon game drive.
DAY 2 – The Special Five
Dedicated search for the Samburu Special Five: Grevy’s Zebra, Somali Ostrich, Reticulated Giraffe, Gerenuk (the giraffe-necked gazelle), and Beisa Oryx.
These species are unique to this ecosystem. The game drives here are rewarding and often less crowded than southern parks.
DAY 3 – Culture of the Butterfly People
The Samburu people are known for their myriad of colorful necklaces and beadwork. Visit a local village to learn about their traditions, dances, and pastoralist lifestyle. In the afternoon, take a guided nature walk along the river to identify birds and tracks.
DAY 4 – Sarara / Reteti Excursion
Drive to the nearby community conservancies. Visit the “Singing Wells” where warriors chant to call their cattle to water (subject to seasonal availability and permission). Alternatively, visit the Reteti Elephant Sanctuary (booking required) to see community-led rescue and rehabilitation efforts.
DAY 5 – Departure
Final morning game drive as the sun hits the distinct flat-topped mountains like Ol Olokwe. Breakfast and departure back to Nairobi.
