The Swahili word for roots carries more weight than its English translation suggests. Roots are not merely where something begins — they are how it survives, how it draws nourishment, how it remains anchored when the seasons change. We chose this word deliberately. It describes how we work.
Mizizi House was founded in Nairobi in 2013 by a collective of East African guides, naturalists, and cultural educators who shared a single frustration: that most international travel companies were selling Africa as a backdrop, not as a subject.
We believed — and still believe — that the continent's greatest asset is not its wildlife spectacle, but its human depth. Its 3,000 languages. Its living cosmologies. Its artists, farmers, healers, and elders who carry knowledge that no university can confer.
Our team is deliberately small. We grow slowly, carefully, and only in ways that allow us to maintain the quality of attention that defines a Mizizi journey.
The answer begins with a Swahili word, and a belief about what travel, done honestly, can do.
We design journeys that produce not just memories, but comprehension — a genuine, lasting understanding of the places and peoples encountered.
We envision a future where travel strengthens the places it visits — economically, ecologically, culturally — rather than depleting them.
We prioritise depth over breadth, honest storytelling over curated fantasy, and genuine reciprocity between travellers and the communities they visit This is the art of traveling well.
Every guide, camp manager, and cultural liaison on a Mizizi journey was born within the ecosystems they lead. Their knowledge is inherited, not acquired from textbooks.
Our itineraries are deliberately under-scheduled. We build in time to linger, to return to a place that moved you, to follow a conversation wherever it leads.
A minimum of 40% of every journey’s net revenue flows back to local suppliers, guides, community lodges, and conservation funds — not to offshore holding companies.
Africa is complex. We do not airbrush its history or simplify its present. Our guides speak honestly about colonialism, conservation politics, and the realities of modern African life.
