The Swahili word for roots carries more weight than its English translation suggests. Roots are not merely where something begins — they are how it survives, how it draws nourishment, how it remains anchored when the seasons change. We chose this word deliberately. It describes how we work.
At Mizizi House Expedions Ltd, we live by a simple belief: where every expedition tells a story.
Born in Kenya, Mizizi House Expeditions grew out of our deep love for travel — not just movement, but meaningful discovery. The kind that invites you into different cultures and traditions, introduces you to new flavors, and creates genuine human connections that linger long after the journey ends.
For years, we designed our own travels with intention. Every experience carefully chosen. Every moment purposeful. Every place of rest offering the kind of comfort that restores and inspires. We’ve never seen adventure and luxury as opposites — to us, they belong together.
That philosophy shapes every expedition we create today. Thoughtfully curated, quietly luxurious, and adventurous at heart. Rooted in community, by design — and guided by a deep respect for the environments and cultures that host us.
We don’t take you where everyone else is going. No crowded viewpoints. No predictable paths. Instead, we guide you beyond the obvious — into real homes, untouched landscapes, and cultural encounters that feel personal, rare, and deeply human.
Each journey is built alongside trusted local partners, championing local tourism, supporting livelihoods, and contributing to the conservation of natural and cultural heritage. We believe travel should leave places better than it found them — protecting ecosystems, preserving traditions, and creating value for future generations.
And we stand firmly by one principle: we never recommend an experience we haven’t lived ourselves. If we send you there, it’s because we’ve walked it, felt it, and believe in it. Our intention is simple. That you don’t just visit a place, but truly experience it. That you leave not only with memories, but with a deeper appreciation — and a renewed desire to protect what you’ve encountered.
From our Kenyan roots to the world, we carry one standard — intentional, story-driven travel where every detail matters. This is more than travel. It’s a story you carry with you. And we would be honored to help you write it. Karibu.
Mizizi House was founded in Nairobi in 2013 by a collective of East African guides, naturalists, and cultural educators who shared a single frustration: that most international travel companies were selling Africa as a backdrop, not as a subject.
We believed — and still believe — that the continent's greatest asset is not its wildlife spectacle, but its human depth. Its 3,000 languages. Its living cosmologies. Its artists, farmers, healers, and elders who carry knowledge that no university can confer.
Our team is deliberately small. We grow slowly, carefully, and only in ways that allow us to maintain the quality of attention that defines a Mizizi journey.
The answer begins with a Swahili word, and a belief about what travel, done honestly, can do.
We design journeys that produce not just memories, but comprehension — a genuine, lasting understanding of the places and peoples encountered.
We envision a future where travel strengthens the places it visits — economically, ecologically, culturally — rather than depleting them.
We prioritise depth over breadth, honest storytelling over curated fantasy, and genuine reciprocity between travellers and the communities they visit This is the art of traveling well.
Every guide, camp manager, and cultural liaison on a Mizizi journey was born within the ecosystems they lead. Their knowledge is inherited, not acquired from textbooks.
Our itineraries are deliberately under-scheduled. We build in time to linger, to return to a place that moved you, to follow a conversation wherever it leads.
A minimum of 40% of every journey’s net revenue flows back to local suppliers, guides, community lodges, and conservation funds — not to offshore holding companies.
Africa is complex. We do not airbrush its history or simplify its present. Our guides speak honestly about colonialism, conservation politics, and the realities of modern African life.
